Words

Have you ever heard the song called Forest Fire by Josh Wilson?

He's not bulletproof
Don't let him fool you
His laugh is a lie
He's dying inside
From the sticks and stones
somebody threw

Our tongues are like matches
Our ears are like trees
Our words are like sparks
On dry summer leaves
It doesn't take much
For the flames to rise
And turn a soul Into a forest fire

Our words are so important. They hold so much power within them. It may not seem like it, but our words can hurt. Our words should glorify God. Does profanity build a person up and bring glory to Gods name? Of course not. Does calling someone a name make them feel good? No. We should only be saying things to people that we’d want said to us. We should only use words that build people up. We should speak in a way that would show others that we are Christians.
If a person listened to every word you’ve ever said, would they know that you love Jesus? Or would they be surprised that you’re a Christian because of the words you say?

Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Matthew 15:18
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.

Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Matthew 12:36
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

Colossians 3:8
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

James 3: 4-5
Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

James
But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

James 3:10
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
